MATCH REPORT: UoN Defeat Birmingham in National League Opener

NATIONAL LEAGUE: University of Nottingham Futsal win the opening game of the season 8-1 against Birmingham University City Tigers to go top of the FA National League with a dominant performance at David Ross Sports Village.

The squad saw debuts for Joe Payne, Chris Bright and University of Nottingham Futsal Academy graduate, 16 year old Charlie Marzano. University of Nottingham Futsal started strongly, quickly taking the lead with a cutting pass from an impressive Tom Gascoyne to find Sam McGrath who made it 1-0 to the home side. National League captain, Pav Tomczak struck minutes later to double the lead and extend the advantage before a well finished goal by an exceptional Ryon Leyshon assisted by Connor Woodworth taking the score to 3-0. University of Nottingham Futsal were unable to convert two late 10m penalties but continued to dominate the game.

University of Nottingham Futsal did not waste time in adding to their tally two minutes into the second half with Tom Gascoyne finishing a well worked team goal set up by a confident Sam McGrath, on his popularly welcomed return to the club. Birmingham University City Tigers fought to score and got their reward with a well taken individual goal by Rhydel Ikanasa. However this only spurred University of Nottingham Futsal on scoring three goals in the next two minutes with Tom Gascoyne and Sam McGrath both set up by an impressive Joe Kenny taking the score to 6-1.

Birmingham City University Tigers were awarded a 10m penalty following a sixth foul however was saved by a reliable Joe Payne in net. Connor Woodworth concluded two well worked team goals and a fantastic individual performance by providing two further assists for both Tom Gascoyne and Sam McGrath to complete their hat-tricks.

“Birmingham were much improved from last season and clearly progressing under the coaching of Edu.

“I am pleased to see Sam (McGrath) and Tom (Gascoyne) immediately hit the ground running. Joe (Kenny) and Connor (Woodworth) had great games too. Connor is in the best place all round I have ever seen him. We will be back in as a squad on Tuesday ready to move things forward and improve.” said Head Coach, Marc Forrest.
