This afternoon, we sat down with University of Nottingham Head of Performance Futsal and English Universities Head Coach, Marc Forrest, to get his thoughts on the success of the first half of the season featuring the new-look programme at the club.
University of Nottingham Futsal have had a fantastic start to the season with the introduction of the new Performance Futsal Programme. How have you found the first half of the season since arriving?
We are extremely encouraged by the performances and results since the start of the season. Across Men’s National League, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th team we have had only four defeats which is credit to the players throughout the programme, especially learning new ways and with the changes that have been made. Also the people behind the scenes, the coaches, performance services, the Committee, Kiri, Lynn and more. It has been great to see players grow in confidence over the last few months. Men and Women are both unbeaten top of their FA National League, with all BUCS teams competitive and an increasingly popular and developing Academy. We will continue to improve but it is no doubt an exciting time for University of Nottingham Futsal.
After a great start to both the BUCS and National League campaigns, what are your goals for the club going into the second half of the season?
Our ambition as a club is to continue to provide opportunities to players, aiding their welfare, development and performance to ensure they have a great experience, progressing and performing consistently in all competitions. The objective for the National League squad is to gain promotion to the FA National Super League. There seems to be a real togetherness forming throughout the club which is really pleasing to see.
University of Nottingham Futsal National League captain, Dylan Malpas, made his international debut in November and was part of the Four Nations victory for England earlier this month. Were you pleased to see University of Nottingham’s first England Futsal Senior International?
Dylan is one of the best goalkeepers in the country. It was pleasing to see him perform so well against Wales and during the Four Nations along with the rest of the England squad. We have an exciting and evolving young English based squad and with the new Performance Futsal Programme in place hopefully others can represent the national team at senior or age group levels in the coming years.
After the new year you will face unbeaten FA National Super League leaders, Reading Escolla, away in the FA Futsal Cup. What are your thoughts on the draw?
Undoubtedly Reading Escolla have tremendous quality, as shown by their results so far this season and will present a big challenge. However, it is a fantastic opportunity and test for us, these are the games we want to be involved in, we will prepare and no matter what we will do our best.
The club now break for the winter holidays, with the National League side back in action in the new year at home to Kettering Futsal Club (14/01/18).
