Establishing himself as a focal part of the first team in 2018/2019, 20 year old Politics student, Nick Lane, has made an impressive rise in Futsal since starting out playing for Hugh Stewart Hall’s team in the Inter-Murial Sport (IMS) University Futsal League during his first year.
“One week they were short on players so I said I would fill in. I had played some five-a-side in the past so thought it would be fun to try and play”.
Nick Lane and Hugh Stewart Hall IMS Futsal Team went on to win the IMS League that season and therefore were invited to play against the University of Nottingham Futsal fourth team. Following the match he was invited to start training and playing for the club.
“I wanted to represent the University in a sport so was really keen to start training with everyone. I’ve improved dramatically. From not knowing all the rules of futsal when I played my first match to now playing in the BUCS Premier and National League. I don’t think I’ve ever done something that I’ve improved at, at this rate.”
Last season, Nick made his debut for the club in the BUCS second team in which he scored five goals in an emphatic win and continued to show fantastic form, quickly earning a place in the first team. Nick went on to be a influential player for the team as they won BUCS 1A League and BUCS Play Offs to earn the University’s first Futsal promotion to the BUCS Premier. He was also included and scored as part of the the Nottingham Varsity match.
“Varsity was probably the highlight of my university experience so far, it was surreal to play in front of so many people. Scoring the goal to go 2-0 up was insane, hearing the roar from the crowd when the ball went in was amazing.”
Nick finished the season as the club’s top goalscorer and was awarded University of Nottingham Futsal Player of the Year for his huge improvement as a player and his contribution to the club. He has gone on to play in the National League as well as joining the club’s student committee this year.
“UoN Futsal has been so good, everyone in the club is so nice and so together. Every team gets support from every other and the wins are shared across the whole club. I have benefited from getting class coaching from the beginning that gives you confidence to play properly and means University of Nottingham play such a high quality of futsal and generally dominate the teams we play. It has has also been beneficial to train and play with top class players including England senior and age group players”.
Head of Performance Futsal, Marc Forrest praises Lane for his achievements; “Nick has been and continues to be an outstanding individual on and off the court. He has always been a talented player with huge potential and it has been a pleasure to see him fulfil that more and more which is huge credit to him and his teammates. Nick is an example to others at the University and in general highlighting the opportunities Futsal can bring simply by giving it a go.”
