Futsal is the internationally recognised version of five a side football. Futsal is a portmanteau of Futebol de Salao which translates from Portuguese to Hall Football.

It is credited with honing the skills of world superstars like Ronaldo, Andres Iniesta, Cristano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Despite this, the sport is relatively unknown in the UK, accounting for Englands world ranking of 85.

Futsal is played with 5 players on each team, but unlike traditional English 5-a-side football, the ball is size 4 and weighted, there is no head height rule and the ball may go out of bounds. This results in an extremely fast and technical game.

Despite its infancy in the UK, the sport is growing at an impressive rate. With the introduction of the FA National Futsal League (which UoN Futsal was accepted into for season 2013/14), the game has continued to expand as public knowledge of the sport grows. People around the country are starting to harbour hope that the sport can produce England’s very own Messi or Ronaldo, whilst others are enjoying the sport as a spectacle in its own right.

Futsal is one of the most exciting sports in the world, just going through YouTube gives you a very good idea of what the sport is all about. For example, check out the highlights from the FA National League 2013 finals series below!
